Upper Mascun Canyon

“Mascun” comes from Arabic and means “place inhabited by spirits”. With this beginning, it is not strange that talking about the Barranco Mascun Superior is talking about the Barranco Barranco Barranco of the Sierra de Guara.

Since it was explored in 1956, this canyon has become the benchmark for the sports descents of the Sierra, a classic and essential route.

Descending the Mascún Superior ravine is immersing yourself in one of the jewels of European canyoning. Located in the heart of the Sierra and Canyons of Guara Natural Park, this route is technical, demanding and spectacular. At Avalancha we have been guiding adventurers through its depths for decades, and each descent reminds us why canyoning in Huesca is a unique experience in Europe.

Access and approach from Rodellar

The adventure begins in Rodellar, one of the most picturesque villages in the Aragonese pre-Pyrenees. From there, a well-defined path takes us for approximately 1h 45min of moderate ascent up the northern slope. During the journey, we enjoy majestic views and total immersion in the karst landscape of the Sierra de Guara.

It is important to get up early and prepare well for the day, since the Mascún Superior is long and has no escape routes. We recommend doing it only with professional guides or experienced canyoners.

Technical characteristics of the ravine

The Mascún Superior is a canyon of alpine, technical character and with long stretches of chaos and boxing in. Along the route there are more than 20 rappels, the longest being about 20 meters, with numerous descents and passages where the reading of the terrain is key.

The flow can vary greatly depending on the rainfall or snowmelt, so it is essential to check the condition before the descent. In our case, with more than 30 guided descents in this ravine, we have learned to value every little detail: from the sound of the water on the first ledge to the characteristic smell of the boxwood that covers the ledges.

The total duration of the activity, including the approach and return, is about 8 to 10 hours. A full day for canyoning lovers!

Practical tips and necessary equipment

  • Full-length neoprene of at least 5mm (waters can be cold even in summer)

  • Grippy footwear that is ready to get wet

  • Helmet, harness, eight, anchor line and safety carabiners

  • Canyoning backpack with waterproof bottle

  • Water and energy food enough for a long day

We always recommend going with a guide if you do not know the route well. At Avalancha we organize outings daily during the season, adapted to the level of the group and conditions of the day.

Return and end of the day

The return is equally demanding: a walk of about 45 minutes along a well-defined path, but which is noticeable after the intensity of the descent. Of course, the sensations when you arrive back in Rodellar make up for everything: a mixture of adrenaline, self-improvement and respect for nature.

An experience that leaves a mark

Descending the Upper Mascún is not only a sporting activity; It’s a transformative experience. The silence of its vertical walls, the surprise of each bend, the teamwork and the satisfaction of having completed one of the most iconic canyons in Europe make many repeat.

If you want to live this experience with the safety and confidence of a professional team, discover everything we offer in our canyoning in Huesca.

And if you want more, we also organize hiking routes through the Natural Park, combining adventure and knowledge of the environment in a respectful and close way.
