At Avalancha we have been exploring and guiding canyoning and hiking routes in Huesca for years, and if there is a ravine that surprises even the most adventurous, it is the Gorgonchón. This hidden gem near Sierra de Guara offers us a completely different experience from other ravines in the area: it is underground, technical and absolutely spectacular.
What makes the Gorgonchón ravine special?
Unlike the open and sunny descents, the Gorgonchon is a world apart. It is a canyon carved by water in the limestone rock that runs, for the most part, underground.
The feeling of entering its narrow passageway, with walls that sometimes touch above our heads, is simply magical. Natural light is scarce and each step immerses you more in an experience that mixes canyoning with water caving.
An experience for the senses (and thrill-seekers)
The Gorgonchón is not a canyon for beginners. Although its duration is relatively short (about 2-3 hours inside the canyon), it is very technical and requires the use of ropes, rappelling techniques and progression in very narrow spaces.
During the tour we make several jumps, natural slides and rope descents in an enclosed environment where communication and trust with your guide are key. The water temperature is cold even in summer, and limited vision makes every movement count.
Expert tip: gloves, full neoprene and a well-fitting helmet are a must. At Avalancha we provide all the material and previous training to enjoy safely.
Our personal experience
On one of our recent descents, one participant confessed to us that at first she was intimidated by the darkness and the constant sound of the water, but at the end, she came out with a sense of overcoming and euphoria. “It has been like traveling to the center of the Earth,” he told us with a smile that perfectly summarized what he experienced.
